simply , flash is a program with graphical interface helps you designe awesome things like what i mentions above with very powerful tools and simple in the same time , by interacting directly with objects ( objects as images , sounds and videos mostly) , after importing it , also u can draw and write inside flash platform
lets take a quick look on flash interface ... (flash CS3)
and if u thinking of making games .. then u already know at least most of this tools marked in the image ,but anyway i am going to explain each tools in short later..
flash also contain programing language called ActionScript , its easy to learn , and like most of the modern programing language its Object-oriented programming (OOP) language .. in short its use objects to desgin and build applications and computer programs like games .. but still u can desgin and build cool stuff without using any single line of script . like short clips and moving objects but not games for sure, and don't worry you will get to know to this language later through those tutorials ..
but what makes all this stuff working through your browser ..here comes the role of Flash Player
Flash player is software for viewing everything made by flash using your browser or standalone (.exe )
final ...you can get the latest Adobe Flash Professional from here
its not free ...you have to pay for it ... or just try it for period amount of time
